China has equipped a Type 071 amphibious landing ship with a powerful, new laser weapon system in the South China Sea. Analysts believe the weapon, likely the Liaoyuan-1 (LY-1), was observed during a joint air and naval drill near Scarborough Shoal on August 1st. This deployment adds significant near-shore anti-drone capabilities to the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). The Qilianshan is the latest large surface vessel to be outfitted with this technology. This development highlights China's growing advancements in directed-energy weapons and their increasing military presence in the disputed South China Sea. The weapon is expected to enhance China’s ability to counter unmanned aerial vehicles in the region, potentially impacting future conflicts. This addition further raises tensions in the strategically important waters.
