Chinese scientists have successfully trialed a new facility producing synthetic rubber using rare earths, a key component for high-performance tyres. This innovation targets the growing demand from the electric vehicle and heavy-duty vehicle sectors, as well as broader industrial and defence needs. Traditionally, metal catalysts are used in synthetic rubber production, but this new process utilizes rare earths. The facility, operated by PetroChina’s Dushanzi Petrochemical with support from the Changchun Institute of Applied, represents a significant step towards industrializing this advanced material. The move aims to create tougher, higher-quality tyres. This development highlights China’s push for self-sufficiency in critical materials and advanced manufacturing capabilities.
