Severe storms have struck Chile, resulting in at least ten confirmed deaths and leaving approximately 100,000 people isolated. The Chilean government has declared a state of catastrophe and deployed the military to assist in rescue operations following the intense rainfall that began on July 15th. The regions of Coquimbo and Atacama in northern Chile are particularly affected, experiencing unusually heavy precipitation. According to Alicia Cebrian, Director of the National Emergency Service (Senapred), there are also four people missing and seventeen injured. Approximately 2,200 homes have been damaged or destroyed, impacting around 2,400 individuals directly. Road closures due to swollen rivers are responsible for the widespread isolation of numerous communities. The death toll has risen from an earlier report of five fatalities.
