Heavy rainfall in Indian-occupied Kashmir and parts of Punjab is predicted to cause a significant surge in the Chenab River’s water level, potentially reaching high-flood stage within the next few days. The Punjab Irrigation Department warns the situation could become critical if predicted heavy rains materialize. Pakistan’s Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has issued a forecast of high flood levels in the Chenab, Jhelum, and Ravi rivers, as well as associated nullahs, extending through July 24th. The current weather system is driven by a westerly wave and a strong monsoon from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Besides river flooding, the FFD also warns of potential flash floods in hill torrents of DG Khan and streams in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, alongside urban flooding in numerous cities across Punjab. Currently, the Indus River is reported to be flowing at unusually low levels.
