Following the launch of the National Smart Cities Plan, Cameroon’s National Assembly and UN-Habitat are strengthening their partnership. On September 9, 2026, the President of the National Assembly, Théodore Datouo, met with Anacláudia Rossbach, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat, in Yaoundé, with the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Célestine Ketcha Courtès, also in attendance. Discussions centered on the challenges facing Cameroon, particularly the uncontrolled urban sprawl in Yaoundé and its negative impact on the environment, climate, population, and economy. UN-Habitat advocated for controlled and inclusive urbanization, proposing decentralization, localization of Sustainable Development Goals, and the promotion of local building materials. A key focus was on collaboration between the parliament and government to enact appropriate legislation, while the National Assembly pledged to prioritize women’s access to housing and land ownership and support laws for better urban planning in Cameroon.
