In Yaoundé, Cameroon, a workshop trained young leaders in critical thinking and fact-checking skills to counter online hate speech, coinciding with the International Day for the Fight against Hate Speech on June 18th, 2026. The initiative, a collaboration between the UN Human Rights and Democracy Centre for Central Africa and EDUK-MEDIA Cameroon, focused on responsible social media use. Participants, including university students and youth organization members, learned to identify misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, understanding their impact on human rights and social cohesion. The training covered relevant legal frameworks and prevention mechanisms, alongside practical exercises using accessible fact-checking tools. Emphasis was placed on developing critical thinking skills to evaluate online content reliability. Participants pledged to promote responsible digital practices, combat hateful content, and share their new knowledge within their communities, acting as advocates for online safety and truth. The workshop aimed to empower a new generation to actively address the growing challenge of online harms.
