Cameroon’s government has reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights of widows on the occasion of the 16th International Widows’ Day, observed under the theme “Justice, Dignity and Economic Empowerment for Widows.” A ministerial statement and subsequent discussion were held, highlighting the ongoing discrimination faced by widows in the country. The government intends to strengthen protective measures and support systems to address these issues, focusing on legal education and economic empowerment initiatives. The Minister emphasized the need to combat abuses against widows and their children, which are considered human rights violations hindering development. Widows in Cameroon frequently experience legal, economic, and social exclusion, denial of inheritance rights, property theft, harmful traditional practices, and limited access to justice. The Minister described instances of families seizing assets and evicting widows immediately after a husband’s death, leaving them and their children destitute, and condemned the stigmatization of widows as being cursed or responsible for their husband’s death. The patriarchal structure of society was identified as a contributing factor to the vulnerability of widows.
