Cameroon officially launched its National Smart Cities Plan on September 8, 2026, aiming to transform cities like Yaoundé, Douala, Bafoussam, and Garoua into more inclusive, connected, and sustainable urban centers. Led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (Minhdu), the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (Minpostel), and UN-Habitat, the plan is built on three pillars: technology for urban management, innovation and social inclusion, and modernized governance. The initiative will leverage digital tools to address daily challenges such as traffic, waste management, and public safety, streamlining municipal services. It focuses on supporting local startups and universities like École Nationale Supérieure Polytechnique Yaoundé I to develop tailored solutions for Cameroon’s specific issues. Crucially, the plan empowers local authorities with resources and a clear framework to drive the transformation, responding to rapid and often chaotic urbanization plaguing the country, and increasing resilience to climate change impacts like flooding and heat.
