The Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CDHC) issued a 13-page statement in Yaoundé on September 30, 2026, marking the International Day for Universal Access to Information. The CDHC acknowledges the efforts of the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) and the Ministry of Communication (Mincom) in combating fake news, but expresses concern over the rise of deepfakes and the silence of certain administrations. This year’s theme, retained globally, focuses on preserving the integrity of information in the digital age and the role of access to information in countering disinformation. The CDHC emphasizes that access to information is a fundamental right essential for exercising all other rights, tracing its origins to 2002 in Sofia, and subsequent proclamations by UNESCO and the UN. The commission specifically praised recent actions by the government, including the Ministry of Defence’s debunking of false information regarding Gendarmerie competition results and rumors of human trafficking in Yaoundé. Additionally, the National Communication Council (CNC) received recognition for suspending journalists and media outlets for damaging statements.
