Cameroon, the Central African Republic (CAR), and the UNHCR have signed an operational document outlining the resumption of voluntary repatriation for Central African refugees living in Cameroon. The agreement, finalized on July 14, 2026, details the practicalities and timeline for the return process. Led by Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, the tripartite commission meeting included representatives from CAR’s Ministry of Humanitarian Action and the UNHCR. Participants confirmed the certainty of resuming voluntary returns, with the UNHCR pledging continued technical and operational support. The CAR Minister expressed gratitude to Cameroon for its hospitality since the 2013 post-election crisis. Current health and security challenges in certain areas of CAR, including cholera outbreaks, will be considered during the repatriation process. As of June 30, 2026, Cameroon continues to host a significant number of Central African refugees.
