The Cameroonian government, in partnership with AJESH, is strengthening disaster prevention measures in the mangrove ecosystems of Limbe and Tiko, in the Southwest region. A meeting held July 20-21 brought together local authorities, government officials, civil society, and traditional leaders to improve early warning systems and protect these vital ecosystems. Discussions, led by a representative from the Ministry of Environment, focused on coordinating responses to increasing risks of flooding and coastal erosion. Participants identified gaps in current disaster preparedness and proposed recommendations to enhance early warning systems. A key focus was also placed on reducing plastic waste which threatens mangrove health, prioritizing ecosystem-based solutions. The mangroves act as natural defenses, protecting the coastline, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining local fisheries, making this initiative crucial for community resilience. The effort is part of the "Together for People and Planet" (ToPP) program, funded by international cooperation.
