Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, has issued a decree prohibiting non-profit organizations from wearing or possessing clothing, insignia, or symbols resembling those of the country’s defense and security forces, or the United Nations. Organizations currently in possession of such items have 15 days to surrender them to local authorities. The decree, officially numbered 000106/A/MINAT and dated July 21, 2021, threatens legal prosecution for non-compliance. While the reasons for the ban remain unspecified, it aims to prevent confusion between legitimate security personnel, UN staff, and NGO members. Authorities fear this confusion could lead to increased security risks for individuals and property. The measure applies to associations, foundations, and non-governmental organizations undertaking humanitarian, social, or cultural missions.
