Cambodian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are witnessing a significant surge in growth, with registrations increasing by approximately 40% in the first five months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. A total of 738 businesses have officially registered with the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation. This growth is reportedly linked to a consumer boycott of Thai goods, driving demand for locally produced alternatives. The phenomenon, dubbed “patriotic consumption,” appears to be bolstering the Cambodian economy and supporting domestic businesses. The Ministry has welcomed the increase in SME activity, viewing it as a positive sign for economic diversification and resilience. This trend suggests a shift in consumer behavior favoring Cambodian products and a strengthening of the local market.
