Indigenous communities in Cambodia’s Pursat province are petitioning for legal recognition of their sacred forests and burial grounds. Over 60 families from the Chong and Por communities have requested the registration of several hectares as collective community land. This effort aims to safeguard their cultural identity, traditions, and customary practices from potential encroachment or development. Securing legal status will provide a vital layer of protection for these historically and spiritually significant sites. The communities hope registration will ensure the longevity of their heritage for future generations. The request highlights a growing movement within Cambodia to formally acknowledge and protect indigenous land rights. Sarou Vuth is leading the effort to secure these lands.
