Cambodia’s Minister of National Defense, Tea Seiha, has responded to Thai warnings regarding the recent acquisition of two Chinese-made corvettes. Thailand expressed concern that the vessels could escalate tensions in the region. Seiha asserted that Cambodia’s military modernization is solely for defensive purposes and does not pose a threat to any nation. The acquisition aims to strengthen Cambodia’s naval capabilities to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cambodian officials maintain that the country has the right to modernize its armed forces to meet evolving security challenges. This response follows a period of increased Chinese military assistance to Cambodia, raising eyebrows amongst some of its neighbors. The Cambodian government insists its foreign policy remains neutral and independent.
