Residents of Busia are calling for increased public awareness regarding their rights in land acquisition processes, particularly compulsory acquisition by the government. This demand emerged following a public participation forum held at the Busia Agricultural Training Centre. National Land Commission vice chairperson Julie Oseko highlighted the displacement of residents due to government development projects as a key concern. Oseko emphasized the necessity of educating citizens about their entitlements and the procedures involved in land acquisition. Participants at the forum expressed frustration regarding lack of clarity concerning compensation for lost land. The commission pledged to address these concerns and prioritize sensitization programs in Busia to ensure residents are fully informed about their legal rights. Ensuring transparency in land acquisition will prevent future disputes and promote equitable development in Busia.
