Andy Burnham, the Labour mayor of Manchester, has won a seat in Parliament representing Makerfield, clearing the path for a potential leadership challenge against current Labour leader Keir Starmer. Burnham secured a decisive victory over the Reform UK candidate, receiving nearly 25,000 votes to his opponent’s approximately 16,000. He is a popular figure within the Labour party, with some members favouring him over Starmer. Known as the “King of the North” due to his success in Manchester, Burnham has previously attempted to lead the Labour party. Following his win, Burnham criticized the current state of British politics, suggesting a turning point may be at hand. The UK system allows for a prime minister to be replaced by their party without a general election, and Starmer has stated he is prepared to fight any leadership contest. The next UK general election is scheduled for no later than August 2029.
