Brisbane-based artist Justene Williams is currently exhibiting a vibrant and maximalist collection at the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG). Williams’ work is characterized by its playful, almost overwhelming abundance of fantastical imagery, including unicorns, jellyfish women, and even boats that walk. Her art embraces a “more is more” philosophy, creating squishy and joyful worlds for viewers to explore. The exhibition, taking over the QAG this summer, showcases Williams’ unique vision and chaotic creativity. Critics describe the work as delightfully excessive and immersive, demonstrating a distinctive artistic style. Williams’ background, growing up in a wreckers’ yard, may contribute to her affinity for assemblage and repurposing elements into something new and imaginative.
