Bougainvillean leaders have established a timeline for achieving self-governance and eventual independence from Papua New Guinea. Following a meeting in Kokopo Village Resort, the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) and Bougainville Members of Parliament agreed to declare self-government on September 1, 2027. A subsequent independence referendum is planned for either 2030 or 2032, according to the agreed-upon KVR Communiqué, which President Ishmael Toroama is expected to formally announce. The decision marks a significant step in the region’s long-term political aspirations following a period of conflict and negotiation. Details of the roadmap were finalized on June 21, 2026. The announcement follows ongoing discussions regarding Bougainville’s future political status and economic viability. Access to full reporting requires a subscription to Post Courier.
