Bougainville marked 21 years of self-governance with a Foundation Day celebration at Hutjena Oval on Monday. Leaders used the anniversary of the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) to call for continued regional unity. A key focus of the event was the need for increased participation of women in Bougainville’s ongoing pursuit of independence. Speakers reflected on the progress made since the Bougainville Peace Agreement and the ABG’s establishment in 2005. Hundreds of residents attended the commemoration, which highlighted the region’s journey toward self-determination. The event underscored the importance of collective effort in shaping Bougainville’s future.
