Christa Pike, a death row inmate in Tennessee, remains alive and is receiving “life-saving medical care” after a dramatically failed execution attempt. Her attorney, Randy Spivey, has described the process as “torture.” Pike, 50, was scheduled for execution yesterday but survived after being administered lethal injections. She is currently being treated at a hospital in Nashville. Originally sentenced in 1995 at age 18 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer, she would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in 200 years. Witnesses reported Pike was still snoring an hour after the first injection, and she complained of a bizarre sensation in her arm, fearing it would burst, while at least seven needles were used attempting to establish IV access. Governor Lee has ordered an investigation into the failed execution but denied a clemency request.
