Brigadier General James Fowler, Commander of NATO Headquarters Sarajevo, stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (BiH) path to NATO membership is contingent upon demonstrable progress and meeting established criteria, not adhering to a fixed timeline. In an interview with Fena, Fowler highlighted the importance of ongoing defense reforms within BiH. A key assessment, known as NEL-2 evaluation, is anticipated this autumn, focusing on the operational readiness of the Armed Forces of BiH (OSBiH). This evaluation will be crucial in determining the country’s advancement towards potential NATO integration. Fowler emphasized that sustained commitment to these reforms is paramount for BiH’s aspirations. The commander’s statements underscore NATO’s focus on capability and preparedness as prerequisites for membership. Ultimately, BiH’s success depends on its own efforts to strengthen its defense capabilities and meet NATO standards.
