A recent attack targeted devices designed to secure bitcoins, resulting in the theft of tens of millions of euros worth of cryptocurrency. Analysis by Galaxy Digital estimates at least 1,596 bitcoins – over 88 million euros – were stolen due to a vulnerability in devices sold by Coinkite. These devices generate security codes to protect bitcoin holdings, but a flaw allowed hackers to crack these codes and gain unauthorized access. Coinkite warns customers they remain at risk and advises immediate transfer of funds to secure locations. Initial reports indicate over 60 million euros were stolen in 41 minutes, with potential losses climbing to 111 million euros. It’s currently unknown if any Dutch citizens were affected, and individuals experiencing losses are encouraged to contact NOS.nl.
