Biljana Plavšić, the wartime vice-president of Bosnia’s Serb-dominated entity, has died in Belgrade at the age of 96. She was the only woman convicted of war crimes by the Hague Tribunal, stemming from her role during the Bosnian War. Despite the conviction, Plavšić consistently maintained her innocence, asserting until her death that she had “done nothing wrong.” Her conviction related to her participation in the persecution of Bosnian Muslims and Croats during the conflict. Plavšić served a portion of her sentence before being released on parole. Her death marks the passing of a controversial figure deeply implicated in the atrocities committed during the war in Bosnia. The circumstances surrounding her involvement and the ongoing debate over her culpability remain significant chapters in the history of the region.
