In Bhutan, a culture of presenting a facade of wellbeing – often summarized by the phrase “Thik cha” (meaning “I’m fine”) – can hinder open discussion about mental health struggles. This societal norm, while rooted in cultural values, may prevent individuals from seeking help or acknowledging their difficulties. Experts suggest that creating space for honest conversations is a vital initial step towards improving mental wellbeing within the country. Acknowledging and addressing internal struggles, rather than simply stating “Thik cha,” can foster a more supportive environment. The need to move beyond this traditional response enables individuals to openly share experiences and seek appropriate support. Prioritizing these dialogues could lead to a national shift toward prioritizing mental health in Bhutan. This cultural shift is seen as fundamental to holistic wellbeing within the Kingdom.
