Following a period of strained relations after the July 2023 coup in Niger, Benin and Niger are making significant strides towards normalizing ties. A recent visit by Benin’s President Romuald Wadagni to Niamey on June 2nd initiated a thaw in relations. Joint committees of experts convened in Cotonou on June 20th to discuss the full restoration of relations, focusing on reopening the shared border. Discussions are also underway to lift all existing restrictions between the two countries. The first day of meetings concluded at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, signaling positive momentum. Officials anticipate a full border reopening and normalization of relations in the near future.
