Benin, a leading African cotton producer, is upgrading its infrastructure with assistance from China to streamline the transport of cotton from northern farms to processing facilities. Historically, poor road conditions hindered efficient delivery to the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ) near Cotonou. The GDIZ represents a key component of Benin’s strategy to move away from exporting raw cotton and instead process it domestically, adding value to the product. This modernization aims to boost the country’s economy and create jobs within the cotton industry. Improved infrastructure will facilitate faster and more reliable transport, reducing costs and increasing competitiveness. The initiative signifies a broader effort by Benin to industrialize and diversify its economy beyond raw commodity exports.
