A massive wildfire is raging in the High Fens region of Belgium, marking the largest blaze in the country’s history having already burned over 1600 hectares. The fire, while contained on its northern side, continues to spread eastward, prompting partial evacuations of the villages of Sourbrodt and Bütgenbach, with residents being sheltered in Malmedy. Authorities are preparing for potential evacuations in two additional locations. Difficult terrain and shifting winds are hampering firefighting efforts, complicated by the area being a popular tourist destination. International aid is arriving from several EU countries, including helicopters from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, and fire planes from Sweden, to assist in battling the flames. A large fire also continues to burn on the German side of the border, preventing the return of 2000 evacuated residents from Gey.
