Belgium has delivered ten F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, bringing the total number of promised aircraft to approximately 100. Despite this significant addition to Ukraine’s air force, fewer than 40 jets are currently operational. The ongoing conflict with Russia, particularly the use of Russian jet drones, is taking a heavy toll on the aircraft. Each mission flown by these jets increases the need for extensive maintenance and inspections, often requiring the planes to be sent abroad for repairs. Deliveries of the remaining F-16s are scheduled to continue in stages through 2029. The situation highlights the challenge of maintaining an effective air force while facing a determined and technologically advanced adversary in the skies over Ukraine.
