Beavers are unexpectedly playing a crucial role in mitigating drought conditions in the Záhorie region of Slovakia. Rather than causing damage, the beavers’ dam-building activities are creating and maintaining vital wetlands. These beaver-created dams raise water levels, increasing moisture retention in the surrounding soil and preventing further desiccation. The resulting wetlands provide a refuge for biodiversity and help to combat the effects of prolonged dry spells. Researchers are observing that the beavers’ natural engineering is proving more effective than some human-led interventions in preserving the landscape’s water resources. The author’s experience navigating the terrain, using a hazel stick to gauge water depth, illustrates the altered, wetter landscape created by these industrious animals.
