The Bank of Portugal (BdP) has initiated a public consultation regarding draft rules for compensating creditors of the collapsed Banco Espírito Santo (BES). This move concerns a sum of €630 million earmarked for reimbursing creditors. The proposed rules ensure creditors receive no less in compensation under the resolution process than they would have if the bank had been liquidated. This consultation aims to formalize the process and guarantee fair treatment for those affected by BES’s failure. The BdP seeks feedback on the draft notice outlining these compensation guidelines. This action addresses a key point of contention following the bank’s resolution in 2015 and aims to provide clarity and legal certainty for creditors. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to manage the aftermath of the BES crisis and restore confidence in the Portuguese banking system.
