Bangladesh’s war crimes tribunals may need to increase in number, along with expansion of the prosecution team, to manage a growing backlog of cases, according to Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam. Islam made the remarks Saturday at the annual general meeting of the Supreme Court Reporters Forum in Dhaka. Currently, trials are underway in two tribunals, with approximately 30 cases pending. The increasing caseload is putting a strain on existing resources and potentially hindering timely justice. Islam indicated that adding more tribunals and prosecutors could expedite the legal process. This potential expansion reflects the government’s continued commitment to prosecuting individuals accused of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. The move aims to ensure efficient handling of the complex and sensitive cases.
