Singapore-based architect Livina Cali designed and built Rumah Subak, a home near Ubud, Bali, deeply influenced by her childhood connection to the island. The house incorporates traditional Balinese pavilion styles and utilizes locally sourced materials, blending seamlessly with the surrounding subak landscape – the traditional Balinese irrigation system. Cali envisioned the home not only for current living but also for her eventual retirement. The design prioritizes connection to nature and reflects a deep respect for Balinese culture and building techniques. Rumah Subak showcases a harmonious integration of architectural design and the natural environment, creating a tranquil and sustainable living space. It represents a personal and architectural journey rooted in long-held affection for Bali.
