Australian authorities have launched an investigation into the Flydubai copilot who assaulted his captain during a flight between Dubai and Tel Aviv. The investigation is focusing on whether the Omani national was radicalized while studying in Australia between 2015 and 2017, having initially received a student visa in 2014. His visa was revoked in 2019 after ceasing his studies. A counter-terrorism investigation is underway, involving both federal police and security services, to examine the man’s connections to Australia. The incident involved an attack on the Indian captain with an emergency axe during a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, causing the aircraft to descend 4200 meters before being safely landed in Saudi Arabia by two pilots who were passengers. The copilot is accused of attempting to seize control of the aircraft; the flight carried 182 passengers, many of whom were Israelis. He had completed a three-year aviation management degree remotely with Buckinghamshire New University in the United Kingdom in 2023.
