Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong has voiced strong dissatisfaction with Israel’s decision to close its investigation into the death of Australian aid worker Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom and her colleagues. Frankcom was killed in April 2024 alongside six other World Central Kitchen staff when an Israeli airstrike hit their aid convoy in Gaza. The incident prompted widespread international condemnation and heightened concerns regarding the protection of humanitarian workers operating in the region. Wong described relations with Israel as “difficult” in light of the closed investigation. Australia had expected a thorough and transparent accounting of the circumstances that led to Frankcom’s death. The decision to end the probe has further strained the relationship between the two countries. The deaths underscored the extreme dangers faced by aid organizations attempting to deliver crucial assistance in Gaza.
