A federal court in Argentina has sentenced former Planning Minister Julio De Vido to a suspended three-year prison term and a lifetime ban from holding public office. The conviction stems from irregularities in the awarding of contracts to Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht for gas pipeline expansion projects. De Vido was found guilty of illicit enrichment and abuse of power related to the Odebrecht scandal, which has implicated numerous Latin American politicians. Two other individuals, Daniel Cameron and Cristian Folgar, were also convicted in the same case. The court determined that De Vido improperly favored Odebrecht in the bidding process. This ruling marks a significant development in Argentina’s ongoing efforts to address corruption linked to the widespread Odebrecht bribery scheme. The suspended sentence means De Vido will not immediately serve time in prison, but the ban from public office is immediate and permanent.
