International scientists are warning of a disproportionately severe impact from rising sea levels on coastal cities in China, specifically Hong Kong and Shanghai. The research indicates these cities could experience a sea-level rise 15 to 20 percent above the global average. This increase is attributed to gravitational shifts resulting from the melting of Antarctic ice, which will redistribute water globally. Consequently, China’s densely populated coastlines are particularly vulnerable. Even achieving the Paris Agreement’s ambitious goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius will not prevent this localized surge in sea levels. The findings underscore the urgent need to address Antarctic ice melt and prepare for escalating coastal risks in the region.
