Archaeologists in Coatepec, Veracruz, Mexico, have discovered an ancient monolith dating back to the Early Classic period (200-600 AD). The stone carving depicts elite figures engaged in a ritualistic scene. Notably, one figure exhibits characteristics reminiscent of Maya iconography, suggesting potential cultural exchange or influence. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) oversaw the salvage excavation where the monolith was found. The carving appears to show a figure receiving an offering from a divine being. This discovery provides new insights into the religious practices and artistic styles of the region during this period, and the connections between different Mesoamerican cultures. The monolith stands 1.88 meters tall and is a significant find for understanding the area’s history.
