Archaeological discoveries in Romania are challenging established understandings of early European urban development. A ceramic vase, unearthed at the Poduri site, is among evidence suggesting a sophisticated civilization flourished there almost 6,000 years ago. This culture, known as Cucuteni-Trypillian, predates previously recognized early cities in Europe. Researchers believe these settlements, characterized by large, planned communities, housed tens of thousands of inhabitants. The Poduri site, and others like it, reveal evidence of complex social organization and advanced craftsmanship. The findings indicate that the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture may have been the first to create mega-cities on the European continent, prompting a reevaluation of the origins of urban life in the region.
