Researchers Julienne du Toit and Chris Marais have documented evidence of a historical elephant migration route traversing the Karoo, in South Africa. Their research connects the gravesite of Carel Kruger with the |Xam rock engravings at Springbok Oog, suggesting a long-forgotten pathway used by large elephant herds. The findings reveal traces of these vanished populations physically “imprinted” on the Karoo landscape itself. This journey suggests elephants once freely roamed a much wider area than they do today. The discovery highlights a previously unknown aspect of South Africa’s natural history. The researchers’ work brings to light the importance of preserving the land’s historical and ecological memory.
