Researchers are analyzing ancient DNA extracted from skeletons discovered at a medieval cemetery in eastern Turkey, hoping to identify remains connected to the pivotal Battle of Manzikert. The battle, fought in 1071, resulted in a significant Seljuk Turkish victory over the Byzantine Empire, reshaping the political landscape of the region. Archaeological excavations are currently underway near the town of Malazgirt, the historical site of Manzikert, with a focus on the unearthed burial ground. Forensic analysis will complement the DNA studies, potentially revealing details about the individuals’ origins, health, and cause of death. This research aims to provide new insights into the demographics of those involved in the conflict and a greater understanding of the battle’s aftermath. Identifying remains from this crucial historical event could rewrite narratives surrounding the medieval period.
