An international team of scientists, including researchers from Israel, has discovered evidence suggesting hominins controlled fire as early as 1.8 million years ago. The findings, published following analysis of fossilized bones found deep within South Africa’s Wonderwerk Cave, push back the earliest known evidence of fire use by approximately 800,000 years. Previously, the earliest accepted evidence dated back to around one million years ago. Researchers detected traces of burned bone, indicating intentional use rather than natural wildfires. The cave’s location and geological context suggest the fire was contained and utilized within the cave environment. This discovery challenges existing understandings of early human technological capabilities and cognitive development. The research provides new insights into the evolution of hominin behavior and the role of fire in early human life.
