Scientists in Seoul, South Korea, have discovered 66-million-year-old bird feathers preserved within a dinosaur coprolite – fossilized dinosaur excrement. The finding, reported by Yonhap News Agency, sheds light on how birds managed to survive the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Analysis of the feathers suggests they possessed characteristics that may have aided in their survival during the environmental upheaval caused by the asteroid impact. Researchers believe these features could have provided insulation, assisted with flight, or offered other advantages. The coprolite provides a rare snapshot of the interactions between dinosaurs and early birds during this critical period. Further study of the fossil promises to unlock additional secrets about avian resilience and the evolution of modern birds in South Korea.
