Dozens of people with albinism marched in Maputo, Mozambique, on Saturday to advocate for greater social inclusion, equal opportunities, and access to sunscreen. The demonstration coincided with the International Albinism Awareness Day, observed annually on June 13th, and aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges faced by individuals with albinism. Protesters carried signs and chanted slogans denouncing social stigma, discrimination, and barriers to employment. A central demand was affordable access to sunscreen, vital for preventing skin cancer due to the condition’s sensitivity to sunlight. Participants highlighted the financial burden of sunscreen as a major obstacle to its consistent use. The event also included individuals with other disabilities, demonstrating solidarity, and concluded with a workshop focused on promoting the rights of people with albinism in Mozambique, calling for improved access to healthcare, education, and social protection.
