An investigation has been launched in Albania into its growing defense industry following allegations of international arms trafficking. The probe, conducted by Albania’s National Bureau of Investigation and Special Structure Against Corruption, centers around weapons deals and state-linked defense companies. Businessman Ron Yeffet is also under scrutiny, following recordings released by former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj that sparked the investigation. Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government has actively promoted the defense sector as a key national achievement. The searches represent a significant new line of inquiry into the sector’s operations and contracts. This comes as Albania’s arms industry has been rapidly expanding in recent years. The investigation aims to determine if illicit activity has accompanied this growth.
