The Pakistan Peoples Party’s Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) branch has called for the withdrawal of the upcoming election schedule for 12 seats reserved for refugees from Indian-occupied Kashmir. This request stems from ongoing protests led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), who demand the abolition of these refugee seats in the AJK Legislative Assembly. Elections for these 12 seats are held separately from the general AJK elections scheduled for July 27th. PPP-AJK President Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin emphasized the need for dialogue and political consensus to address the escalating tensions. The party highlighted its historical commitment to the Kashmir issue and noted that most demands from a previous agreement with JAAC have been met, with the refugee seat issue remaining the sole point of contention. Yasin criticized the timing of the election schedule release, just days before a planned JAAC protest, suggesting it hinders ongoing negotiations. The PPP believes alternative legal avenues exist to address the refugee seat matter.
