Dutch insurer Achmea reported lower profits for the first half of the year, largely due to substantial payouts related to damages from severe storms in late June. Hail the size of pingpong balls and lightning strikes caused widespread damage to cars, homes, and agricultural greenhouses, resulting in over 12,000 claims and 77 million euros in damages. While the storm negatively impacted the company’s property and healthcare divisions, with a significant drop in profits, Achmea was able to mitigate losses with increased investment income. The investment gains helped offset a 13% overall decline in profits compared to the same period last year. Despite a 55% profit drop in healthcare, Achmea remained profitable, citing fluctuations in margins and a substantial premium base. The company reported 492 million euros in profit from operations, including insurance, during the first half of 2026.
