The number of abortions in the Netherlands rose slightly in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to annual figures from the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ). A total of 39,931 women underwent an abortion last year, up from 39,438 the year before, representing a 1.25 percent increase of 493 cases. The majority of terminations were among women aged 20-40, with 33,907 procedures performed in this age group. The IGJ has not offered an explanation for the overall increase. Eighty percent of all abortions occurred within the first eight weeks of pregnancy, and the largest proportional rise was observed among girls under 15, increasing from 65 to 163 cases. In terms of absolute numbers, the most abortions were performed on women from the provinces of Noord-Holland (11,333) and Zuid-Holland (8,284), while the highest rates were recorded among women from the islands of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, followed by Flevoland.
