Kayaköy, formerly known as Levissi, is a deserted village near Fethiye, Turkey, with a history stretching back 5,000 years. Once a thriving Greek community of approximately 10,000 residents, the village is located opposite the Greek island of Rhodes. In 1922, following the Greco-Turkish War, the Greek population was forcibly expelled as part of a population exchange agreement. This resulted in the abandonment of the village and its subsequent decay, leaving behind thousands of stone houses and churches. Today, Kayaköy remains largely intact, serving as a poignant ghost town and a historical landmark. The site attracts tourists interested in the region’s complex past and the consequences of ethnic conflict. Its preservation offers a tangible link to a lost community and a period of significant upheaval.
