A new $15.5 million fund, Her Horizon Fund, has been launched with the goal of building “unstoppable momentum” to end female genital mutilation (FGM) worldwide. The fund aims to address the harm inflicted on over 230 million women and girls globally who have been affected by this practice. Activists and leaders working to end FGM have lauded the initiative as a significant step forward, especially given recent declines in donor funding. This is believed to be the largest single philanthropic contribution dedicated to eradicating FGM, a practice which persists despite increasing attacks on women’s rights. The fund will prioritize support for FGM survivors leading efforts in their local communities. Organizers are ultimately seeking to raise $100m to fully address the issue and accelerate progress toward ending FGM globally.
